The FDA has approved Xacduro (Innoviva), a combination of the beta-lactam antibacterial sulbactam and the beta-lactamase inhibitor durlobactam, for IV treatment of adults with hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia caused by susceptible isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex (ABC).

According to the manufacturer, the retail price for a box containing 2 doses is $44.99. Some insurance companies have announced plans to cover OTC purchase of the drug for their members.

Oriahnn (Abbvie), a fixed-dose combination of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonist elagolix, the estrogen estradiol, and the progestin norethindrone acetate copackaged with elagolix alone, has been approved by the FDA for oral treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding associated with uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) in premenopausal women. The FDA has approved two additional doses (3 mg and 4.5 mg) of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist dulaglutide (Trulicity – Lilly) for treatment of type 2 diabetes in adults. Dulaglutide has been available in 0.75- and 1.5-mg doses for years.

Ashwagandha is an herb extracted from the roots of an evergreen shrub (Withania somnifera) found in India that has been used as a "tonic" for centuries. No specific constituent has been identified as an active ingredient. Herbal supplements containing ashwagandha, which is also known as winter cherry and Indian ginseng, are widely promoted now in the US for treatment of pain, anxiety, stress, fatigue, sleep disturbances, cognitive decline, diabetes, arthritis, male infertility, and various cancers.

The FDA has approved lutetium lu 177 vipivotide tetraxetan (Pluvicto – Novartis) for treatment of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-positive metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) in adults previously treated with androgen receptor (AR) pathway inhibitors and taxane-based chemotherapy.

The oral poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor talazoparib (Talzenna – Pfizer) has been approved by the FDA for use in combination with the androgen receptor blocker enzalutamide (Xtandi) for treatment of adults with homologous recombination repair (HRR) gene-mutated metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). The drug has been available since 2018 for treatment of deleterious or suspected deleterious germline BRCA-mutated (gBRCAm), HER2-negative locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer.

Fidanacogene elaparvovec-dzkt (Beqvez – Pfizer), an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector-based gene therapy, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of adults with moderate to severe hemophilia B who do not have neutralizing antibodies to AAV serotype Rh74var and currently receive factor IX prophylaxis therapy or have had life-threatening hemorrhage or repeated, serious, spontaneous bleeding episodes. Beqvez is the second single-dose gene therapy to be approved in the US for treatment of hemophilia B; Hemgenix was the first.

The FDA has authorized over-the-counter (OTC) sale of a nonmedicated alcohol-based gel (Eroxon – Futura) for treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in males ≥22 years old. Eroxon is the only FDA-approved OTC and topical treatment for erectile dysfunction. It is also available in the UK and the EU.
