The recent increase in deaths due to overdose of
heroin and prescription opioids in the US has renewed
interest in the opioid antagonist naloxone, particularly
in making it available to first responders and to
relatives and close friends of persons using heroin or
taking prescription opioids. IV or IM administration
by healthcare professionals is preferred, but
peripheral venous access may be difficult to obtain
in IV drug abusers, and exposure to their blood may
be hazardous.

The FDA has approved use of gamma hydroxybutyrate (sodium oxybate is the official generic name; Xyrem - Orphan Medical) for oral treatment of cataplexy in patients with narcolepsy. Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a metabolite of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), is a central-nervous-system depressant marketed in Europe for use in general anesthesia. In recent years it has been notorious for its use in "date-rape" (Medical Letter 2002; 44:21). Xyrem is a Schedule III controlled substance.

The FDA has approved Dyloject (Hospira), an IV
formulation of the NSAID diclofenac sodium, for use
in adults. It can be administered alone for treatment
of mild to moderate pain or in combination with opioid
analgesics for moderate to severe pain. Dyloject is the
first injectable formulation of diclofenac to become
available in the US.
