The FDA has approved ferric pyrophosphate citrate solution (Triferic – Rockwell Medical) to maintain hemoglobin concentrations in adults with hemodialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease. Triferic is the first iron replacement product that is added into the hemodialysis solution at each dialysis procedure.

The nasal spray formulation of the corticosteroid fluticasone furoate is now available over the counter (OTC) as Flonase Sensimist Allergy Relief (GSK) in the same strength as the prescription product (Veramyst) for treatment of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis. It is the fourth intranasal corticosteroid to become available OTC.

The FDA has approved an extended-release intramuscular suspension formulation of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist triptorelin (Triptodur – Arbor/Debiopharm) for twice-yearly treatment of central precocious puberty (CPP) in children ≥2 years old. Triptorelin has been available in the US for years as Trelstar for palliative treatment of advanced prostate cancer. Before the approval of Triptodur, Trelstar was used off-label for treatment of CPP.

The FDA has approved an expansion of the peripheral artery disease (PAD) indication for the oral direct factor Xa inhibitor rivaroxaban (Xarelto – Janssen) to include patients who have recently undergone a lower extremity revascularization procedure for symptomatic PAD (see Table 1). Rivaroxaban is the first direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) to be approved for use in patients with PAD.

The FDA has amended its Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) for the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by Pfizer/BioNTech (Comirnaty) and Moderna (Spikevax) to permit use of bivalent formulations of the products as a single booster dose in persons ≥12 years old (Pfizer) or ≥18 years old (Moderna) whose most recent COVID-19 vaccine dose was a monovalent product given ≥2 months previously as a booster or for completion of a primary series. Glofitamab-gxbm (Columvi – Genentech), a bispecific CD20-directed CD3 T-cell engager, has received accelerated approval from the FDA for IV treatment of relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), not otherwise specified, or large B-cell lymphoma (LBCL) arising from follicular lymphoma after ≥2 lines of systemic therapy. Arformoterol tartrate (Brovana - Sepracor), a singleisomer, long-acting beta₂-agonist, has been approved by the FDA as an inhalation solution for nebulization for treatment of bronchoconstriction pulmonary disease (COPD). Arformoterol is the (R,R)-enantiomer of formoterol (Foradil), which is available as a powder for inhalation and was recently also approved as a solution for nebulization (Perforomist - Dey; available fall 2007)

Opioid use disorder is a chronic, relapsing disease with physical and psychiatric components. It is associated with economic hardship, social isolation, incarceration, increased rates of blood-borne infections such as HIV and viral hepatitis, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and increased mortality. According to the NIH, there were 80,411 deaths involving an opioid in the US in 2021, more than in any previous year. Several guidelines on the management of opioid use disorder are available; all recommend maintenance pharmacotherapy as the standard of care.

Terconazole (Terazol - Ortho), an imidazole derivative, was recently marketed in the USA for treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis. It is available both as a 0.4% vaginal cream (Terazol 7) and in 80-mg vaginal suppositories (Terazol 3).

Teniposide (ten i poe' side; VM 26; Vumon - Bristol), an anticancer drug that has been under investigation in the USA for 20 years, has now been approved for use in combination induction treatment of refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in children. A semisynthetic derivative of podophyllotoxin, teniposide is chemically related to etoposide (VePesid - Medical Letter, 26:48, 1984).
