The FDA has approved the nitrofuran antiprotozoal drug nifurtimox (Lampit – Bayer) for treatment of Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) in children who weigh ≥2.5 kg. Nifurtimox was previously available in the US only through a CDC-sponsored Investigational New Drug (IND) program.

Vyalev (Abbvie), a solution for continuous subcutaneous infusion containing the prodrugs foscarbidopa and foslevodopa, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of motor fluctuations in adults with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD). Vyalev is the first subcutaneously administered product to become available in the US for treatment of PD symptoms. Duopa, a carbidopa/levodopa enteral suspension infused via a nasojejunal tube or percutaneous gastrostomy, was approved in for the same indication 2015.

Ketoconazole (Nizoral - Janssen), an imidazole antifungal drug widely used in a tablet formulation for treatment of systemic fungal infections (Medical Letter 36:16, 1994) and as a topical preparation for fungal skin infections, is also available as a shampoo for treatment of seborrheic dandruff. The shampoo is sold only by prescription.

Now that US Secretary of Defense has decided to vaccinate more than 2 million memebers of the US armed forces against anthrax, US physicians may be asked to answer some questions about the vaccine and the disease.

The article in the July 14th issue contained an error in the last sentence of the last paragraph beginning on page 55. The instrument's reading is determined not by the degree of protrusion of the tympanic membrane, but rather by its mobility.

Ocriplasmin (Jetrea – ThromboGenics) was recently approved by the FDA as an intravitreal injection for treatment of symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion. It is the first drug to be approved in the US for this indication.

The FDA has expanded its Emergency Use Authorization for the adjuvanted protein subunit COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Novavax to include its use as a first booster dose in adults who completed a primary series with any COVID-19 vaccine ≥6 months previously and are unable or unwilling to receive a booster dose of a bivalent mRNA vaccine. The Novavax vaccine is not authorized for use in persons who have received a booster dose of any other COVID-19 vaccine.

Remestemcel-L (Ryoncil – Mesoblast), an allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cell therapy, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in patients ≥2 months old. Steroid-refractory GVHD is associated with a poor prognosis, organ damage, and death, particularly in pediatric patients. Remestemcel-L is the first cellular therapy to be approved in the US for this indication and the only treatment of any kind to be approved for GVHD in children <12 years old.

Results of a recent study suggested that zinc gluconate may be effective in treating the common cold (SB Mossad et al, Ann Intern Med, 125:81, July 15, 1996). Zinc gluconate lozenges, sometimes combined with vitamin C or other ingredients, are available in pharmacies and health food stores throughout the USA.

The FDA has approved the over-the-counter (OTC) sale of Nasacort Allergy 24HR (Sanofi), a triamcinolone acetonide nasal spray previously available only by prescription as Nasacort AQ. The OTC product, which is scheduled to be marketed in the spring of 2014, will be the first corticosteroid nasal spray that can be purchased without a prescription in the US. Nasacort Allergy 24HR is approved for use in patients ≥2 years old with nasal allergy symptoms.
