Human rabies continues to be rare in the USA, but animal rabies is becoming more common. An animal epizootic in the mid-Atlantic states, involving especially raccoons, has recently spread into the northeastern states.

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), in which a balloon catheter distends the vessel at the site of obstruction (Medical Letter, 25:97, 1983), is now an established therapeutic option for treatment of patients with coronary artery disease, especially those with single-vessel disease. Sucralose (Splenda - McNeil Specialty) has been approved by the FDA for use as a nonnutritive sweetener in beverages, baked goods and other foods, and as a tabletop sugar substitute (Fed Reg, 63:16417, April 3, 1998). Other non-caloric sweeteners available in the USA include saccharin (Sweet'n Low, and others), aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) and acesulfame potassium (Sunette - Medical Letter, 30:116, 1988).

The antibiotic aztreonam is now available as an inhalation solution (Cayston – Gilead) to improve respiratory symptoms in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients ≥7 years old colonized with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is the second inhaled antibiotic to be FDA-approved for this indication in CF patients; the aminoglycoside tobramycin (Tobi) was the first. Inhaled antibiotics offer the advantage of high airway concentrations while minimizing systemic side effects.

Anascorp (Rare Disease Therapeutics), an intravenously administered antivenom derived from horse serum, has been approved by the FDA for treatment of clinical signs of scorpion envenomation.

Belotero Balance (Merz), an injectable hyaluronic acid dermal filler, has been approved by the FDA for temporary correction of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds. Several other hyaluronic acid products are also available for this indication (e.g., Restylane, Perlane, Juvéderm).
