The FDA has approved mipomersen (Kynamro – Genzyme) and lomitapide (Juxtapid – Aegerion), each in addition to a low-fat diet and other lipid-lowering medications, to reduce cholesterol levels in patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH).

Three products are currently available in the US for treatment of high-risk,1 nonhospitalized adults with mild to moderate COVID-19: oral ritonavir-boosted nirmatrelvir (Paxlovid), IV remdesivir (Veklury), and oral molnupiravir (Lagevrio). The FDA has approved a 0.75% ophthalmic solution of the alpha-adrenergic antagonist phentolamine (Ryzumvi – Viatris) for treatment of mydriasis produced by adrenergic agonists such as phenylephrine or parasympatholytic agents such as tropicamide in patients ≥3 years old. Ryzumvi is the first drug to be approved in the US for reversal of pharmacologically induced mydriasis.

The FDA recently approved ixazomib (Ninlaro – Takeda), daratumumab (Darzalex – Janssen Biotech), and elotuzumab (Empliciti – BMS) for treatment of relapsed and/or refractory multiple myeloma.

The FDA has approved Namzaric (Forest), a fixed-dose combination of extended-release (ER) memantine (Namenda XR), an NMDA-receptor antagonist, and donepezil (Aricept, and generics), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, for treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's type dementia in patients previously stabilized on both drugs. The patent for Namenda has recently expired and generic formulations of memantine 5- and 10-mg tablets have been approved.
