inhibitor conjugate, has received full approval from the

is the first antibody-drug conjugate to be approved
for treatment of cervical cancer. The drug received
accelerated approval from the FDA in 2021 for the
same indication.

Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) is a common cause of death in patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). PCP is the first serious opportunistic infection in more than 60% of patients with AIDS, and about 80% of AIDS patients develop PCP at least once (AE Glatt et al, N Engl J Med, 318:1439, June 2, 1988). Many studies using drugs to prevent PCP in patients with AIDS have recently been reported.

Carteolol (Cartrol - Abbott) and penbutolol (Levatol - Reed & Carnrick), two oral beta-adrenergic blocking drugs, were recently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for once-daily treatment of systemic hypertension. Both drugs are non-selective beta-blockers with mild partial agonist activity. Beta-blockers currently available in the USA for treatment of hypertension are listed in the table on the next page.

Recent articles in the press have suggested that mifepristone (RU 486 - Roussel Uclaf) can effectively and safely induce an abortion. The drug is currently available only in France and China, but the manufacturer has also applied for a license in the United Kingdom. Mifepristone has been used on an investigational basis in the USA as an abortifacient and for treatment of Cushing's disease and breast cancer, but no manufacturer has applied to the US Food and Drug Administration for approval to market the drug in this country.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two new retinoids for treatment of psoriasis. Tazarotene gel 0.05% and 0.1% (Tazorac - Allergan) is being marketed for topical use in patients with stable, mild to moderate plaque psoriasis. Acitretin (Soriatane - Roche) is being promoted for systemic use in severe psoriasis.

The phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor tadalafil (Cialis - Lilly) is now being promoted for once daily treatment of erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil differs from sildenafil (Viagra) and vardenafil (Levitra), the other PDE5 inhibitors marketed for erectile dysfunction in the US, in having a much longer duration of action.
